Tunnel Vision is an invitation only automotive rally through the tunnels, mountains, and canyons of Los Angeles County to benefit the Midnight Mission in Los Angeles. It’s early on a Sunday morning – I’m approaching the McClure Tunnel, the “Monte Carlo style” passage that connects Interstate 10 West to the Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica. I’m heading north; leaving the chaos and congestion that is the west side of Los Angeles behind me and approaching the Pacific Ocean and the sublime seaside landscape that lies only a quarter mile ahead. Entering the tunnel, I notice a Daytona convertible approximately three car lengths ahead. Its color, “Nero Daytona” is utterly perfect and fortunately, I’m going just fast enough to catch up. I roll the windows down, kill the radio and maneuver right along side. As we rip through the tunnel I hear the most perfect automotive sound ever experienced… the rumbling exhaust of a 12 cylinder Ferrari motor echoing off the solid walls of the tunnel. You’ve done exactly the same, haven’t you? You know the sound, the feeling, the smile on your face, even the perplexed look given to you by your wife or girlfriend. Perhaps it was a different tunnel on some far away road, but you’ve done it, and we all have the same blissful thought when recalling the moment "it doesn't get any better than this"
