The company was formed as a subsidiary on September 1, 2005, from the former Marathon Ashland Petroleum, LLC, and is based in Findlay, Ohio. Marathon Petroleum operated as a subsidiary of the Marathon Oil Corporation until July 1, 2011.

The Indianapolis Monumental Marathon is a 26.2 mile road race run annually in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. It is one of two fall marathons run in Indianapolis, the other being the Indianapolis Marathon. In 2015 it claimed to have become one of the 20 largest marathons in the United States.[1]
