Amnesty Int'l Asks LOCOG For Clarity On Dow Deal
If reports from The Daily Express are true, Dow's role in the 1984 Bhopal gas leak disaster has sent Olympic officials into full-on crisis management mode. After a report last week that Olympic officials have considered canceling Dow's £7million rights to wrap the main Olympic stadium, Amnesty International has penned a tersely worded letter to Lord Coe. Seema Joshi, Head of Business and Human Rights Amnesty International, has requested (via letter below) details on how Dow's sponsorship of the Olympics fits with the social and ethical sponsorship guidelines the committee has set forth. Since Dow is a TOP partner, the firm's 10-year official partnership with the Olympics is with the International Olympic Committee, not LOCOG, but the wrapping of the stadium were marketing rights extended by LOCOG. This is one issue that it appears won't be going away in the run-up to the Games next year, as well as during it, when protesters could make things quite difficult for LOCOG, the IOC and its partner, Dow.
