Angry Birds' Next Step Towards Global Domination: Team Partnerships?
In posting the following video to philadelphiaeagles.com, the Philadelphia Eagles confirmed a new partnership with Rovio's hit game Angry Birds. The deal is the first team sports deal for the fast growing entertainment company. The marketing partnership, which was first reported by the Wall Street Journal, is said to include an upcoming Eagles-themed version of the Angry Birds game, collaboration on social media efforts and Angry Birds themed Jumbotron replays inside the Linc.
Adding the Eagles as a partner is the latest in a series of aggressive marketing moves aimed at geographically expanding the Rovio brand. In May, the company launched a partnership with Finnish Formula 1 driver Heikki Kovalainen and it recently revealed plans to launch Angry Birds theme parks and retail stores across China.
WSJ points out that if the Eagles partnership is successful, it may open the door to similar agreements between Rovio and other bird-themed teams such as the Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens and Seattle Seahawks, Pittsburgh Penguins, Anaheim Ducks, St. Louis Cardinals, Baltimore Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays; and Atlanta Hawks.
“I think they understand, and this was part of our pitch, that this is a very scalable partnership for them and if it succeeds and we have every confidence it will, this could open a massive door for them to walk right into,” Ari Roitman, the Eagles’ senior vice president of business told the Wall Street Journal.
Rovio’s Angry Birds game franchise has been downloaded over one billion times to date.
