FedEx Denies Being Financially Tied to Memphis Conference Bid
FedEx says it has no financial interest in seeing that Memphis University gets an invite to a BCS conference. The statement comes in response to this CBS report released over the weekend, which said FedEx Founder Fred Smith had offered as much as $10 million, likely in the form of sponsorship, to any BCS-affiliated conference willing to offer an invite to Memphis University. FedEx has said it has had no conversations with conference officials about a re-alignment involving the hometown university. The statement from FedEx says:
"While FedEx is supportive of the University of Memphis’ efforts to join a BCS conference, recent reports that FedEx is offering financial incentives as part of this initiative are incorrect. FedEx executives have not had any discussions with BCS conference officials regarding conference re-alignment."
