FIFA: Beer Will Be Sold In Brazil

Despite the fact that alcohol was banned at Brazilian football matches in 2003 in an attempt to curb violence, FIFA officials are pushing for an exemption during the 2016 World Cup. FIFA, and its recently renewed beer sponsor, Anheuser-Busch InBev, have a huge stake in being able to sell beer at the World Cup.

"Alcoholic drinks are part of the FIFA World Cup, so we're going to have them. Excuse me if I sound a bit arrogant but that's something we won't negotiate," FIFA General Secretary Jerome Valcke said Wednesday in Rio de Janiero. "The fact that we have the right to sell beer has to be a part of the law."

On Thursday, Valcke will meet with the local organizing committee (LOC) to discuss details.

Last October, AB InBev extended its FIFA sponsorship deal as the World Cup’s official beer sponsor through the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where despite strict government regulation fans will reportedly be able to drink alcohol in "designated zones."
