Iowa Launches Plan To Raise Money With Rest Area Sponsorship

Iowa’s 40 interstate highway rest areas soon will be brought to you by corporate sponsors according to a new plan recently approved by the Iowa Transportation Commission. If the Iowa Department of Transportation is successful, giving brands greater access to the nearly 16 million visitors that pass through the state's rest areas. In exchange, Iowa DOT is hoping to make a dent in its $3.7 million annual operating budget for the rest areas.

State officials said that some companies had already expressed interest, but that the agency would first have to evaluate partners to screen out controversial sponsors.

“We haven’t specifically decided how we will deal with that. But the way the rules are written we do have some latitude to decline a sponsorship that we think would be detrimental to the public good. It is not tightly defined, but there is some room to evaluate the organization,” John Adam, director of the Iowa DOT’s highway division told the Des Moines Register.
