Kelly Clarkson Cigarette Sponsorship Under Fire

The FDA may be cracking down on tobacco promotions here in the U.S., but one D.C.-based lobbying group has hopes of influencing tobacco sponsorship abroad, as well. At issue is Indonesian cigarette brand, L.A. Lights, and the company's sponsorship of Kelly Clarkson's planned April 29th tour stop in Jakarta.

Campaign For Tobacco-Free Kids has launched the website, TobaccoFreeIdol.org in protest of the sponsorship stating "The US has banned tobacco sponsorships of entertainment events, but unfortunately, Indonesia has few laws to protect its youth from this type of harmful tobacco marketing."

While acknowledging Clarkson's commitment to the well-being of children, the group says "allowing her concert to be sponsored by a cigarette company sends the wrong message to young people that smoking is acceptable."

The site provides links and encourages visitors to take several actions to protest the star's appearance including posting on her facebook page and tweeting to her username using the #tobaccofreeidol hashtag. The site also offers a message form to directly email the Clarkson's manager, Narvel Blackstock.

"If Kelly Clarkson goes ahead with the concert, she is by choice being a spokesman for the tobacco industry and helping them to market to children," said Matt Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.
