.ORG Joins Go Daddy in Sports Sponsorship
You don't see .COM or .NET sponsoring much so this may be the first time an internet URL suffix has signed a sports sponsorship. .ORG, The Public Interest Registry (PIR), will team up with its domain registration partner, Go Daddy, to sponsor JR Motorsports and driver Jamie McMurray.
In conjunction with GoDaddy.com, .ORG advertisements will run on McMurray’s No. 7 car during two upcoming NASCAR races in Atlanta and Dover.
“Next to the .ORG logo on the No. 7 car, we are calling on the NASCAR community to ‘get together, get online,’ which signifies the widespread use of .ORG domain names to give millions of individuals, companies and organizations an online home to share their interest, passion or cause,” said Lance Wolak, vice president of marketing and sales for .ORG, The Public Interest Registry.
The sponsorship could also be a play to get more sports organizations to register .ORG domains. Organizations involved in sports and recreation make up a large number of registrations for .ORG, and the number increases each year. Well-known organizations such as the International Olympic Committee and the NCAA have .ORG domains, but the majority of sports registrations come from local and individual sports clubs.
The .ORG domain is the Internet's third largest "generic" or non-country specific top-level domain with more than 9 million domain names registered worldwide.
