Pay For Performance: Airline Reaffirms Stance On Performance-Based Sponsorship

Performance-based sponsorships are still something of a novelty so it may come as something of a surprise to learn that Arsenal partner, Emirates, pays for the club's on-field performance. This doesn't bode well for a team that's in the midst of one of the worst seasons in club history.

Nevertheless, the airline's sponsorship brass reaffirmed the pay for performance clause in its $239 million, five year deal this weekend, disclosing:

"There are certain clauses, from 2015, that we pay them a percentage less if they don't perform," Emirates SVP Boutros Boutros recently confirmed.

With such a big investment (Emirates sponsors both the Arsenal's stadium and jersey), Boutros says the performance-based arrangement is only fair.

"It's fair to us and fair to them," Boutros said.
