Proposed Bill Calls For Schools To Sell Cafeteria Naming Rights
A new Florida bill, entitled the Student Nutrition Enhancement Act, aims to authorize school districts to enter into a contract for the sale of naming rights for their public school cafeterias; providing for use of revenue generated by a contract for sale; providing an effective date. If approved by the Legislature of the State of Florida, each district school board would be allowed to set the procurement policy and sell the naming rights for public school cafeterias in their district.
The bill, put forth by state Rep. Irv Slosberg, D-Boca Raton, stipulates that revenue generated from the new program must be used "to enhance the school district's school food service budget and to meet the nutritional needs of students."
“There have got to be ways to raise revenue without raising taxes, increasing fees or cutting education, health care and other services,” Slosberg told The Florida Times Union. “It’s a great way to encourage public-private partnerships.”
The proposed act, if approved, is scheduled to take effect July 1st, 2012.
