Rolex Sponsors Land Speed Record Attempt
Rolex has agreed to a multi-year sponsorship that will make it the Official Timing Partner of The Bloodhound Project, an international education initiative started in 2008 and focused on a 1,000mph Land Speed Record attempt. The engineering challenge and attempt to break the existing record is being led by a British team, led by current world record holder, Andy Green, and Project Director, Richard Noble. Terms of the 3 year deal were not released.
“I am delighted to welcome Rolex to the team. It is hugely important that a brand of its pedigree become a partner in this project, especially considering Rolex's history of supporting record-breaking endeavors now and in the past," Bloodhound Project Director Richard Noble said. "This is the first major brand partnership to compliment our existing technical partnerships and I’m pleased to say the technical, educational and commercial programmes are all on schedule for 2013.”
“I’m enormously proud that I’ll be wearing a Rolex on my wrist when we go for the record," Driver, Andy Green, said. "It will take 3.6 seconds to cover the Measured Mile, and then the team will race like hell to get the car turned around for a return run within the hour with the world watching. It will be a split second business and terrifically exciting but the real prize is the creation of a lasting legacy that inspires young people to take up careers in science and engineering. It’s going to be a very special moment in time and I’m delighted to welcome Rolex, the leader in time, to the team.”
Bloodhound's Founding Sponsors, such as STP, will have their logo on the side panels of the car in promotions leading up to the event, as well as during the attempt at the record. If all goes according to schedule the attempt will be made in 2013.
“We are creating the ultimate car; we’re going where no-one has gone before,” Noble said.
