The company was formed as a subsidiary on September 1, 2005, from the former Marathon Ashland Petroleum, LLC, and is based in Findlay, Ohio. Marathon Petroleum operated as a subsidiary of the Marathon Oil Corporation until July 1, 2011.

The Andouille Festival, started in 1973, is an annual food festival held each October in LaPlace, Louisiana.
Marathon Petroleum Co. in Garyville has partnered with St. John Parish as the presenting sponsor of the 42nd Andouille Festival, and donated $25,000 to this year's event, St. John Parish President Natalie Robottom announced Sept. 14.
