Fresh off her record-breaking swim from Cuba to Florida, long-distance swim legend Diana Nyad today announced a 48-hour continuous "Swim for Relief" to take place in New York City's Herald Square on Oct. 8 - 10, 2013 in support of Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts. The swim will raise funds for AmeriCares, a nonprofit global health and disaster relief organization that delivers medicines, medical supplies and aid to people in need around the world and across the United States. P&G brands such as Duracell, Tide and Secret are underwriting all production costs for the Nyad Swim for Relief, maximizing the funds donated that directly support AmeriCares Sandy-related recovery activities. At 64, Diana Nyad completed her lifelong dream of swimming from Cuba to Florida, proving that determination, guts and resilience can make the journey to even the most Xtreme Dream® inspirational. As Diana swam, much of the country followed her every stroke. Back in the 1970s, Diana Nyad was known as the greatest long-distance swimmer in the world. Her world records, such as circling Manhattan Island and crossing the 102.5 miles between the Bahamas and Florida, led to induction to the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame and many other honors. Diana left swimming at the age of 30 with one regret - In 1978, after battling the odds in the open ocean for 41 hrs and 49 mins, Diana was forced to abandon her never-before swum challenge of reaching Florida from Cuba. However, as 60 approached, Diana found herself returning to the water to realize her dream swim. Her drive toward Xtreme Dreams has inspired many to live their own lives with similar passion.
