Twitch is a live streaming video platform focused on e-sports and video gaming. The website was launched in June 2011 by Justin.tv co-founders Justin Kan and Emmett Shear as a subsidiary of Justin.tv focused on gaming-related content. According to internal analytics, there are over 43 million viewers on Twitch every month, with the average viewer watching an hour and a half a day.

Overwatch League (OWL) is the premier Professional Esports League for Overwatch, organized by Blizzard Entertainment. The league is touted as the first 'truly global professional esports league, featuring franchised teams representing cities from all around the world. The League currently has 12 team owners for the inaugural season, set to start in January 10 2018. The preseason will begin December 6 2017 featuring all 12 teams showcased in exhibition matches.

Published January 9, 2018 The Overwatch League will receive at least $90M over two years from Twitch in exchange for streaming rights, sources said. The deal, announced earlier today, is believed to be the biggest exclusive distribution deal in esports history. Twitch will show every regular-season and postseason contest for OWL, which starts play tomorrow night, and develop reward programs and new virtual merchandise for viewers. Overwatch publisher Activision-Blizzard’s in-house platform MLG.tv will show half of the regular-season contests, but the dominant share of the audience will come via Twitch, which will stream in Korean, English and French everywhere except China.
