It was co-founded in 1985 by Olympic medalist and former USA Swimming Co-Captain Steve Furniss. Tyr is based in Huntington Beach, California. Contrary to popular belief, its name is not an acronym. She is a five-time Olympic gold medalist and 14-time world champion, the most in history for a female swimmer. She is the current world-record holder in the women's 400-, 800-, and 1500-metre freestyle (long course). She also holds the fastest-ever times in the women's 500-, 1000-, and 1650-yard freestyle events.
