The first Major Taylor Cycling Club was started in Columbus, Ohio in 1979. Since then clubs have been organized all over the country and in other parts of the world. Today there are 73 clubs listed as Friends of the Major Taylor Association, which maintains the memorial statue of Major Taylor in Worcester, Massachusetts and continues to honor his legacy through good works. These clubs have a total membership of more than 3,000 riders.
In the 42 years since that first club, there has never been a national gathering of the Major Taylor Clubs. Major Taylor’s hometown, Indianapolis, Indiana, will host the first Major Taylor national event in June of 2022. The event is hosted by the Major Taylor Cycling Club of Central Indiana, a program of Bike Indianapolis.
The event will be a fun-filled weekend for riders and their families. It will also introduce a new national organization, Major Taylor 1899 Association, that will coordinate future collective activities of the Major Taylor clubs. We hope to welcome one thousand riders and their families to Indianapolis for the weekend of June 17 – 19, 2022.
