Basketball
As you know, school athletics represent the only real structure many young people are exposed to in
inner-city communities across the country. At Minneapolis North High School, basketball plays a critical
role in the success or failure of our young men. We are constantly challenged regarding resources which
creates a barrier for kids in this community to share the same experience as their peers in surrounding
neighborhoods. Although public schools receive educational funding from the federal and state
governments, athletic programs rely heavily on fundraisers and ticket sales to keep our programs going.
During the course of a year, the Minneapolis North gymnasium gets used by thousands of students and
athletes, unlike other area school gyms. Our athletic facilities are worn, outdated, and often messy which
does very little to boost the morale of Minneapolis North student athletes. We are looking to upgrade
our facilities which includes purchasing a new score board. This is an opportunity to support a program
whose goals are to create champions in the classroom, community, and families. As a coaching staff we
are constantly reminding our kids that they are representing themselves, their teams, their school and their
community. If that is indeed the case, the students at Minneapolis North deserve a facility that honors their
commitment and that reinforces the concept of team and community pride.
The upgrade of our facilities would be an outstanding way of continuing to bring back and build “Polar
Pride “. I recently heard Dr. William Smith, Principal of Minneapolis Southwest High School, state that “First
class kids deserve First Class Facilities” and I certainly believe this to be true. We believe the North High
Boys Basketball program is consistent with the mission and interest of your organization, and hope that
you will find it in your hearts and budget to support this program. If I can provide additional information
to encourage consideration, please feel free to contact me at (763) 458-5450. I would also be happy to
personally meet with your committee to present the proposal.
Thank you in advance for your consideration and I look forward to speaking with you. Sincerely,
Larry A. McKenzie
