My name is Casey Gillespie, I am the co-founder and Vice President for The Ohio Bruins. The Ohio Bruins are a men’s semi-professional basketball team in Columbus, Ohio. The team was founded in December of 2019 by Desmond Williams and myself with the goal of making the community a better place through the game of basketball. All home games are played at Northside Christian School located at 2655 W Schrock Rd, Westerville, OH 43081.
In the first season of operation, the Bruins competed in the American Basketball Association (ABA) and finished with a final record of 8-5. The team featured talent from across the United States with many of our players coming from right here in Columbus, Ohio. The COVID-19 pandemic that has affected so many people certainly made it challenging and thankfully everyone remained safe and healthy.
This past summer the Bruins competed in the Official Basketball Association (OBA) which was started by former WNBA first round pick Tamara Moore. The OBA featured teams from all over the country however the Bruins played in the premiere division. The team was comprised of talent from across the country and were coached by Don Sellers, a well-respected NBA Scout/Evaluator for Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies, Portland Trailblazers, and San Antonio Spurs. The Bruins ended the season with a final record of 16-2 and were able to capture the OBA league national championship in Orlando, Florida.
The men that play for the Bruins have different levels of playing ranging from those that have never played to those who have played division 1 and overseas. Each player has a goal to further their careers and the aspiration to land a job either overseas or the NBA. The Bruins can assist with this by forming relationships with agents/teams, providing film, and accurate stats that can be used to market themselves to land these jobs.
In our city unfortunately we have a lot of division and violence amongst our communities. As we return to the ABA this fall/winter It is our goal to further bring the community together and develop a sense of unity. We are hopeful to form relationships and potentially partnerships with local businesses and community members to accomplish this. If you have any interest in becoming a partner with the Ohio Bruins, I would love to speak with you. For more information about the Ohio Bruins please visit http://www.ohiobruins.com
